Sail Melbourne is continually seeking new sponsors to aid in the delivery of one of the Worlds greatest sailing events and we invite you to join us. The following information provides a more detailed explanation of what Sail Melbourne is and the significant opportunities that exist for sponsors within it.

Sail Melbourne – information for potential sponsors

The Sail Melbourne International Regatta is the most significant annual sailing event on the Australian sailing calendar. As one of only five International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Grade 1 events in the world and the only one Southern Hemisphere, if you are serious about your sailing then you cannot afford to miss it.

Sail Melbourne is the sailing equivalent of the Australian Open for tennis players, the Melbourne Grand Prix for Formula One – it attracts the best of the best.

Sail Melbourne is held annually in December - January each year and:

  • Includes up to 30 different events consisting of:
    • The ISAF Grade 1 event for all 11 Olympic Classes (the same sailors who go to the Olympics)
    • World Championships for different dinghy, windsurfer and/or keelboat classes (2 – 3 a year)
    • Asia-Pacific / Oceania sailing Championships (1 - 3 a year)
    • National Championships for different dinghy classes (10 – 15 a year)
  • Is conducted from up to 18 different yacht clubs around Port Philip and through out Victoria.
  • Now attracts between 2,000 and 3,000 competitors from up to 30 different countries
  • Captures the attention of many of sailings’ elite

Sail Melbourne provides the greater Australian sailing fraternity, in particular youth sailors, with a terrific opportunity to learn and develop into future World Champions. By conducting professionally run regattas, bringing many of the World’s best sailors, with support programs and coaching, excellent facilities and support we are helping Australian sailors become even faster, more professional and better experienced to take on the world.

Sail Melbourne – Promotion and Exposure

Significant time and attention is placed upon promotion and exposure of the event within the National and International Media, the public and the sailing fraternity. Sponsors are acknowledged in a multitude of ways and we work hard to ensure that the maximum amount of leverage off the event is extended to all stakeholders. Sail Melbourne – sponsorship opportunities

As Melbournians move to enjoy the sun on the beaches of the bay each summer, sponsorship of Sail Melbourne provides the opportunity for sponsors to claim ‘ownership of the bay’, bringing significant exposure to the entire population.

Sail Melbourne – further marketing information

The following demographic examples may be taken as typical across Sail Melbourne’s Australian participants and audiences and were taken from the 2005 Victorian Yacht club membership base.

  • Over 30 % of are within the Leading Lifestyles Group A and nearly 20% are within the Domestic Appliances Group F as defined on the www.mosaicaustralia.com.au website (refer group notes below)
  • 33 % are in top affluent / family demographic compared to 8% in the rest of Melbourne
  • These people are mainly employed in business and professional services, over half are between 35 and 55 years of age and the average period of involvement in sailing is 20 to 24 years
  • 30 % or sailors live in traditional families, 25% live in “pseudo” families and single males are overrepresented compared to the general population
  • Further analysis of the sailing demographic can be calculated against such things as leisure, entrainment, income attitudes and values upon request.

Leading Lifestyles Group A are typically the wealthiest families in the most exclusive suburbs. They are well travelled with discerning tastes, investment portfolios, are professional employed or own their own business and live in homes valued at the top end of the scale

Domestic Appliances Group F are summarised as better-off families in core suburban and rural fringe locations. They are reasonably well educated, well informed and are long term homeowners with relatively high affluence.

The public face of the Sailing and Sail Melbourne is one of a clean, environmentally friendly sport that combines physical strength and endurance, mental ability, tactical skill, technical knowledge and teamwork. It’s no wonder that many of today’s leaders in business, government and the community have a background in sailing.
